Prolonged Sitting In front Of TV May Cause Colorectal Cancer

Recent research has found that prolonged watching TV in sitting position leads to a higher risk of colorectal cancer development under the age of 50 Years. The appearance of cancer through prolonged sitting began to develop in the rectum and was not associated with body mass index (BMI) and exercises.

This is one of the first researches that associate inactiveness in body with higher colorectal cancer risk. The research is also published in the journal JNCI Cancer Spectrum.

Also, the scientists contributed to this innovative study recognized that young-onset colorectal cancer is generally more threatening than colorectal cancer developed in aged people, and is about to have some distinct biological characteristics.

Due to aggressive spreading, the diagnosis of the young-onset colorectal cancer is quite tough, leading to a low survival rate.

Colorectal cancer, as the name suggests, develop from colon or rectum part of the large intestine. The bacteria present in the colon region of the intestine help in food breakdown and pass the undigested remains to the rectum, where the waste goes on accumulating till evacuation.

The waste remains may lead to the formation of cysts that can become cancerous.

Based on the Year 2012 statistics revealed by the World Cancer Research Fund, Colorectal cancer is the third mostly occurring cancer probably affecting 1.4 million people each year.

For investigating the cancer occurrence relation with extended sitting posture, Dr. Yin Cao—Senior author of the study—and colleagues initiated the project in 1976 to observe the risk factors associated to chronic diseases specifically in women.

Later, the data of 89,278 women were analyzed by the team, which comprises the time spent by women sitting and watching TV.

During the huge follow-up period of 22 Years, young-onset colorectal cancer was diagnosed in 118 women, who had watched TV without focusing on the time.
